East Coast Tour Part 1

One week into the east coast tour I'm finally getting a chance to sit down and write.
I've been filming a lot on my kodak Zi6, but I admit there is a learning curve.
I'm learning how to edit and render film in imovie and it takes time--lots of it.
My apologies for not being able to post edited footage in the same day;
I'm working on it.

6/30/09 Dallas, TX
We began in Dallas, TX at the Opening Bell Coffee House (Mosaic) location.
It was a sweet intimate gig and we made some new friends.
Here is one video, my first venture in taking a camera on the road.

7/1/09 Memphis, TN
We rolled into Memphis with just enough time to eat some great BBQ at Central BBQ, unload our equipment and catch a tapping of the talented Modern Skirts at Ardent Studios.
Two gigs this night.

Young Ave Deli-Special thanks to Rachel Hurley for putting this show together. We opened for the Modern Skirts joined by Jamie Randolph. Great room, cool vibe, and yummy beer.

Neil's-Special thanks to Richard for creating such a sweet songwriter's night. This place felt like Austin, no doubt-big stage, dark bar and a lot of folks just gathering to hear new music.

I've got some footage I'll be posting once I can trim and edit.

2/18/09 Folk Alliance Day 1

I'm in the Hurricane
Folk Alliance 2009

For those who don't know. Folk Alliance has a rather unique tradition of Gureilla style showcasing where the artists perfom on three floors of a hotel room.
So you walk down the hall and pop in and out of hotel rooms listening to different artists.

2/16/09 Baton Rouge, New Orleans

Baton Rouge

Entering Louisiana is like driving into a story book--trees shooting out of the water, the suspended bridge above Lake Pontchartrain, and the old houses.
So surreal.
Carrie and I recovered from a long nights rampage of wine and conversation while driving to Baton Rouge. There we met my dear friend Ben Bell to perform at Chelsea's Cafe. But before we hit the venue we dropped by WRKV to do a round with Public Radio's Taylor Caffery.
His show airs on Saturday 2/21/09. Those of you with iphones and computers see if you can find a web stream.
We performed in a round to an ever attentive listening room.
It was such a treat to sit next to Ben once again. He was the first guitar player I ever saw play live in Huntsville, Tx. and yes, he inspired me to pick up my piece of wood and start singing.
I still remember driving up Guadalupe in Austin with Ben to purchase my first Seagull Guitar.
I didn't even know one chord.

Special thanks to Ray and Beryl for their hospitality and Ben for lining it up!

New Orleans

All I could think about was Gumbo! Louis, Carrie and I strolled down to the French Quarter, ate dinner, powdered our noses with beignets and played a set in the oldest coffee house in New Orleans--Neutral Ground.
Crazy little cabin feel to the room. Special thanks for Louis and Gina.
Louis and there cute shotgun house.

Trivia I Learned: What's a Shotgun House?
"The Shotgun house is a narrow one-story dwelling without halls. Each room is placed behind the other in single file. The roof ridge is perpendicular to the street. The traditional description of why these houses are called "shotgun" is that if one fired a shotgun through the front door, the shot would pass through the lined-up doors of each room and out the back door."

My bowl of original New Orleans Gumbo--to Jon!

2/14/09 Crazywood in Huntsville,TX

Huntsville's has a great new creative space--Crazywood
Owned and operated by the one and only John Smither.

Carrie and I performed a beautiful House/Gallery Concert in Smither's new playground!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you friends and family who came out that night. It was family/ friend reunion to say the least. I never felt such good vibes.

I grew up in Hunstville, TX and I remember from my highschool years wishing there was an
alternative space such as this. I'm glad it is has arrived to inspire all it's frequenters and bring quality entertainment to Huntsville. Yoga, Music, Steam Room, Workshops....Huntsville's getting cultured...watch out.

thanks John S, John H, and Christie!

2/14/09 Anderson Fair, Houston TX

Invisible Postcard: My New Blog

Ok I'm diving in and starting a blog.....we'll see how it goes.
I'll begin with a formal statement......(cough)......
"In this age of information societies, electronic banter, and online access....."
No really.
My intention with this blog is to update you on my musical tour adventures, so let's start.

2/14: Tour begin with Carrie Elkin at Anderson Fair (Houston, TX).
We shared the stage with the ever so articulate Sam Baker. An evening of love songs for all the Hallmark V-Day Folks out there. Thanks to Tim at Anderson for having us. It was a warm crowd and an intimate evening. Special thanks to Rick Wilson for the photos and video! Also, Chris, Lucy and Walter. I love you smiling faces. The unforgettable mark of the evening? Roses? How sweet are they? Perhaps they are as deceptive as strawberries--plump round red--but so often deceptively disappointing. Even the rose is imperfect--for all of it's eye enchanting glory it's sent is fickle.
